Essex Street (Lawrence, MA)

The 2009 Friends of the Lawrence Public Library historical calendar focused on Essex Street, the long time commercial street of the city.  The calendar was so successful that a second calendar focusing on Essex Street was published in 2010.

Take a stroll down Essex Street in the 19th Century, 1920,  1940, and  after 1950.

  1. I was only 6 years old in 1959 but I do remember many of the businesses I have seen here. Thanks so much for sharing! – >Julie Pagliarulo

    • My name is Horace Privitera and that was my father that had the photography studio on Essex St. I was 4 years old in 1959 but I remember clearly my father bringing me over to see the lovely Grace Furnari in her store on a regular basis! They were good friends and I remember that sweet lady, little Grace Furnari!! I have tried to reach out to you but have had no luck! You can reach me at hprivitera@comcast.net or on face book! I have great memories of those days!

    • I made a mistake, I was born in 1959, not 6 yrs old in ’59. Oops!

  2. I worked at A.B. Sutherland Co. for 11 years, and Kap’s Mens
Store for 2 years. Essex Street was always crowded with
shoppers, especially on weekends. Christmas was
an unbelievable time. So busy . Sutherland co. sponsored
and paid for the Christmas Parade . I remember attending a few
meetings with other business’ about the parking situation and
    the meters. Great times.
