Lawrence Public Library was given a donation of 33 issues of an entire newspaper collection titled La Información. This Spanish newspaper ran from Sep. 1988 – Jan. 1990. It is believed to be the second Spanish newspaper created in Lawrence. The editor in chief, Maria Magdalena Castaños Blouin made this generous donation. See her open letter to the community below.

Dear Community Members of Lawrence,    

I was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1974 with my parents and five sisters. At that time I was already fluent in English, but Spanish was my first language. I finished my last year of High School at Lawrence High School and this always gave me strong roots to the community. For most of my adult life I worked in Lawrence for several non-profit human services agencies.    

The newspaper was born out of the existing needs that I saw while working and serving the Hispanic community in Lawrence. Being non-judgmental, placing myself in someone else’s shoes, and responding with compassion; gave me a vision. I wanted to create a bridge between the new immigrants that came to the city and the existing English speaking local community. The newspaper was an important link between the different ethnicities of the Spanish speaking community and also served as a buffer in cultivating relationships with the local Anglo community. My goal was to create awareness and share knowledge about who we are.  The logo of La Información is a lighthouse that represented shining the light of information to the city of Lawrence.    

My work on the newspaper was very personal to me and for which I made many sacrifices. I am grateful to the city of Lawrence for giving me the opportunity that as a woman I would not have had in my country. My relationship with the newspaper was that as a mother to her child. This newspaper – La Información was a way of giving back to my community. I am very pleased to have the library house such an important piece of Lawrence’s history for all to view

Lawrence Public Library recibió una donación de 33 números de una colección completa de periódicos titulada La Información. Este periódico en español se publicó desde septiembre de 1988 hasta enero de 1990. Se cree que es el segundo periódico en español creado en Lawrence. Estimados miembros de la comunidad de Lawrence, 

Nací en la República Dominicana y emigré a Lawrence, Massachusetts en 1974 con mis padres y cinco hermanas. En ese momento ya hablaba Inglés con fluidez pero el Español era mi lengua de origen. Yo terminé mi último año de secundaria en Lawrence High School y esto contribuyó a darme raíces profundas en la comunidad. Durante la mayor parte de mi vida adulta trabajé en Lawrence para varias agencias de servicios humanos sin fines de lucro. 

El periódico nació de las necesidades existentes que vi mientras trabajaba y servía a la comunidad hispana en Lawrence. Sin juzgar, poniéndome en el lugar de otras personas y respondiendo con compasión; me dio una visión. Quería crear un puente entre los nuevos inmigrantes que llegaban a la ciudad y la comunidad Anglo local. El periódico fue un vínculo importante entre los diferentes grupos étnicos de la comunidad de habla hispana y también sirvió para facilitar el cultivo de relaciones con la comunidad Anglo local. Mi meta fue crear conciencia y compartir conocimiento sobre quienes somos. El logo de La Información es un faro que representaba brillar la luz de la información en la ciudad de Lawrence. 

Mi trabajo en el periódico fue muy personal para mí, por lo que hice muchos sacrificios. Le estoy agradecida a la ciudad de Lawrence, por darme la oportunidad que como mujer no habría tenido en mi país. Mi relación con el periódico era la de una madre con su hijo. Esta publicación – La información fue una forma de aportar a mi comunidad. Estoy muy satisfecha de que la biblioteca albergue una pieza tan importante de la historia de Lawrence para que todos la vean.
