The Cross Street School was built in 1852 at 50 Cross Street. No picture of the school remains. The school was replaced by this brick school building in 1898. At the beginning it continued to be called the Cross Street School, but was later renamed in honor of General William H. Donovan. Gen. Donovan served during the Spanish-American War.  The Gen. Donovan School ceased being a Lawrence Public School in 1954 and Boston Catholic Arch Diocese took ownership two years later for the purpose being a school for St. Francis Parish in Lawrence.   St. Francis School opened in 1956.  The building is no longer a school.
