‘An Gorta Mor’ Memorial (Lawrence, MA)

hungerMay 6, 2006 the Rev. James T. O’Reilly, OSA, Division 8 Ancient Order of Hibernians dedicated this monument to the Irish of Lawrence particularly the refugees of the Irish Famine (1845-1850). The name of the monument ‘An Gorta Mor’ translates to A Great Hunger. It is written on the monument made of Barre granite and includes a Celtic Cross and two tablets. During the time of the suffering in Ireland, the Lawrence Irish were able to collect $2000 to help their countrymen. The monument is located in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence, MA.
