Jimenez Square and Bridge (Lawrence, MA)

jimenez1Jimenez Square is located at the intersection of Lawrence and Oak Streets, just behind the main branch of the Lawrence Public Library and at the corner of O’Neill Park. It was named in honor of Staff Sargeant Alex Jimenez from the 10th Mountian Division. Sgt. Jimemnez, with four others, was captured May 12, 2007 in the “Triangle of Death” in Iraq. Twenty-one months later he and Byron Fouty’s bodies were found in shallow graves. During the long months of waiting for word, the City paid tribute to Alex in many ways. He received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. In addition to the square named after him the City honored Jimemez naming the newly constructed (2014) bridge on Canal Street over the Spicket River.
