Gilbert Memorial Bridge (Lawrence, MA)

Gilbert Memorial Bridge over the North CanelThe Gilbert Memorial Bridge is the bridge crossing over the North Canal at Broadway. It is named after Sargeant Joseph A. Gilbert, veteran for the Spanish American War, the Philippine Revolt, the Boxer Rebellion, and World War I. Sargeant Gilbert was born in Ohio and entered the regular US Army just before the Spanish American War where he was a member of Company F Ninth Regiment. He retired from the military in 1921 and lived in Lawrence the rest of life. He died March 16, 1938. The bridge was rebuilt by the Federal Works Administration for the Public Works Administration in 1939.
