Vandekerkove Bandstand (Lawrence, MA)

bandstand1The Vandekerkove Bandstand is located in The O’Connell South Common. It is named after Private First Class Roland Vandekerkove was killed in action August 7, 1944 somewhere in France while serving with Company C 51st Armored Infantry Batallion of the Fourth Armored Division. This bandstand was dedicated to Vandekerkove on May 20, 1946 preceded by a parade and with the participation of L’Union Franco-Belge and the American Legion.

  1. […] There have been two monuments on the Lawrence Common dedicated to the men and women who served during World War II. In 1944 the City dedicated a four-sided wooden monument with the names of 9,400 men and women then serving in the war effort. In 1947 after the first memorial fell down, the City decided on Leonard Craske, a Boston Sculptor, to create a fitting work fo the sum of $20,000. The process had begun earlier with Gold Star Mothers and other relatives of the more than 300 war dead casting their vote on which of two sulptures would be the one used.
