Ceplikas, Dr. Thomas H. (1917-1998)

Candidate Eisenhower in Lawrence

This collection is composed of 57 photographs taken by Dr. Ceplikas over a period of 30 years.  There are two black and white photos (undated) showing the Oxford Paper Mill producer of the paper used to print National Geographic magazines.  Two color photographs document candidate Dwight Eisenhower’s visit to Lawrence October 12, 1952.

There are two groups of snapshots of two local festivals that took place in 1983.  They are the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and what the photographer called a Latino Festival.  The latter would eventually be called “Semana Hispana” or Hispanic Week.  Both events are currently (2001) yearly events.

Finally there are a few photographs of local churches and politicians.

Thomas A. Ceplikas was born March 25, 1917 in Lawrence, Massachusetts of Lithuanian parents.  He graduated as the valedictorian of Johnson High School (now North Andover High School), Tufts University (magna cum laude), and Tufts Medical School.  He interned at Rhode Island Hospital and completed his residency in obstetrics at Providence Lying-In Hospital.  He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Philippines.  Following his discharge he started a family practice in North Andover and affiliated with Lawrence General Hospital and Bon Secours Hospital.

Dr. Ceplikas had a range of hobbies including travel, gardening, and photography.  The Stevens Memorial Library hosted an exhibit of his photographs.  He died May 8, 1998.
