Rollins, John Rodman (1817-1892)

rollinsThe Rollins collection consists of 2 books of correspondence concerning the genealogy of the Rollins family.

John Rodman Rollins was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, February 9, 1817.  He graduated Dartmouth College in 1836.  After teaching school for 12 years, Rollins was paymaster for the Essex Company in Lawrence, Massachusetts for thirteen years.  He became the fourth mayor of Lawrence in 1857 and served two single year terms.  He was defeated in an attempt for a third term in 1859.  As an ex-mayor he was a member of the Pemberton Mill Disaster Relief in 1860.  Rollins served on the School Committee from 1861 to 1864 and then became Superintendent of Schools in 1864.  The Civil War found Mr. Rollins a Captain in the Union Army from 1864 to 1865.

After the war he was employed as paymaster at the Pacific Mills.  In 1869 he would be elected Alderman from Ward 1.  Again serving on the School Committee from 1882 through 1889 he was Vice-Chairman for all those years. Mr. Rollins married Sara Stearns Patterson, Nov. 20, 1844.  They were the parents of two children.  He was a member of the Lawrence Street Congregational Church.  John R. Rollins died September 18, 1892 at the age of 75.
